Good overview of the @YNAB budgeting technique (essentially amortisation). I’m a huge fan. (Don’t be put off by their rather opaque website, it’s basically just an app). I’ve got an expensive car bill today but I planned for it in YNAB so it’s no big deal. https://t.co/eenDyvFEmD
Bloody hell, nearly every state in the USA has a drink-drive limit of 0.8 BAC.
As someone who often jots down their BAC after every night of drinking, I find this insane. At 0.8 I wouldn’t even consider operating a PS4 controller, let alone a car.
The Wall Street people on Twitter refer to their community as ‘FinTwit’ (Financial Twitter).
It’s not even like ‘Quant’ - originally a slur - that they adopted with pride. They chose it. FinTwit. These people manage trillions of $ of assets. I find this very alarming.
I have a garden. I have a whisky. I have a cigar. I have the sun. I have this bank holiday off. I have happiness.
Oh and I also have a straw hat. But the jury is still out as to whether this is a good thing or not. https://t.co/JhFAsY5NQc
Front page of the Newcastle Courant, 20th of February 1768: ‘A noble Lord has, we hear, engaged to eat six pounds of pork sausages in half an hour for a wager of 600 Guineas.’
I’m glad to hear sausage eating contests have a proud 250 year history. An honourable sport, for Lords!
YouTube died to me the moment they removed the ‘Similar’ section on a videos page and replaced it with ‘Up next’.
“You’ve watched a video about watches. So why not watch a Joe Rogan or Dragons Den clip next?” https://t.co/yDwG7y0WOL
Example: I never tap on images of half-naked ladies on Instagram no matter how much Instagram or my hormones want me to. The moment I do the algorithms will say “got him” and ruin my ‘Explore’ page forever.
Same story on YouTube with “SJW ONWED COMPILATION #13” type videos.
Someone needs to come with a word for when you know your actions are being monitored by an algorithm so you adjust your behaviour to hopefully alter the algorithms perception of you.
“… the number of indicators signaling a recession has jumped from three to five. […] whenever the signal count was at five or higher in the last 40 years, the US was either already in recession or dropped into recession in the next 12 months.” https://t.co/9rOuQnTMv5
I am in Thessaloniki, Greece. I like it. Not as grimy as Athens (and less tourists too). But it still has a dirty, sticky edge. Food is consistently decent. Main downside is the noisy, wide roads. Pedestrianisation required. Most restaurants/bars shut at 3AM. Good for night owls. https://t.co/iszGu5WGYM
My finest cinema experiences:
Only God Forgives (1/4 audience left, but I was enthralled.) Hot Fuzz (I couldn’t believe the fizz and pop of it.) Johnny English (I was young. I found it gut-bustlingly hilarious) Dunkirk (One word: IMAX.) Ex-Machina (Just adored it.)
“Only God Forgives” has one of the worst non-VC-1 Blu-Ray transfers I’ve seen. You know when you scan a printed out photo from the 90s? That’s what it looks like.
Such a shame. A wonderful and weird film with some fantastic use of colour. Check it out. You’ll love it or hate it.
I’m much preferring doing Morning Pages instead of a Night Diary.
Far less likely to forget or just not be bothered.
And the difference in tone is interesting. Morning Pages: full of optimism. Night Diary: full of regrets. “I am going to…” vs. “I was going to…”.
My new MacBook arrived today and I’m experiencing butterfly keys for the first time. This picture sums up what it feels like to use. https://t.co/JbLhP7QYJS
I’m currently trying to get better at remembering world flags. I think I’m doing well, but then out of nowhere comes the flags of Palestine and Sudan :| https://t.co/6A7nZufT1B
Several days later and I still can’t get Chernobyl episode 3 out of my head. Probably one of the finest pieces of television I’ve ever seen. The makeup alone in several of the radiation victims scenes is worth your time.
Please seek out the show! This is a future classic. https://t.co/23zvDXHYvw
If you are trying to expand the people you follow on Twitter to people who have different opinions than your own this is a good tip by @siracusa, from this weeks @atpfm.
TL;DR: Simply don’t engage with them at first. Quietly listen to what they have to say. https://t.co/0K5aojn3Cg
